Project Update: Strip-Out Works Progressing at New Lidl, Watford
RTL Group Contracting is pleased to share the latest progress from our ongoing works at the new Lidl in Watford, where our team is delivering a comprehensive strip-out package as part of the redevelopment of the site.
The building was previously occupied by Wilko and is now undergoing a significant transformation ahead of its next chapter as a new Lidl store.
Converting an existing retail unit for a new occupier requires the existing space to be carefully stripped back, removing redundant finishes, partitions and services to create a suitable starting point for the new store.
Since commencing on site, our team has made significant progress, with several major elements of the existing Wilko unit now removed and further works continuing across the building.
Current Progress on Site
A number of key elements of the strip-out have now been completed, while works continue across the remaining areas of the former retail unit.
Ceiling Finishes Removed
The removal of the existing ceiling finishes has now been completed.
Stripping out the ceiling areas has opened up the space and provided access to the high-level services above, allowing the team to progress with the next phase of removals.
This is an important stage of the strip-out process within an existing retail building, where services, fixtures and finishes need to be removed in a carefully coordinated sequence.
Internal Partitions Stripped Out
The existing internal partitions have also been stripped out, significantly opening up the internal floor area.
The former Wilko layout contained partitions and internal areas associated with its previous use. Their removal allows the existing layout to be taken back and creates the open space required for the next stages of the Lidl redevelopment.
With the partitions and associated finishes removed, the scale of the transformation within the building is already becoming increasingly visible.
Staircase Removed
Another significant element of the works completed to date has been the removal of the existing staircase.
This required a controlled and carefully planned approach to ensure the staircase could be dismantled and removed safely while other elements of the strip-out programme continued across the site.
With the staircase now removed, the area has been cleared and prepared for the next stage of works.
High-Level Services Removal Underway
With the ceiling finishes removed and the existing services exposed, our team is currently progressing with the removal of redundant high-level services throughout the building.
These works involve systematically working through the exposed ceiling areas and removing services associated with the building's previous use that are no longer required for the new scheme.
High-level service removal forms an important part of preparing the former Wilko unit for its new use, ensuring redundant installations are cleared before the new store infrastructure and subsequent trades progress.
Floor Finishes Removal in Progress
Removal of the existing floor finishes is also currently underway across the site.
Our team is progressing through the building to remove the existing finishes and expose the areas beneath, preparing the floors for the next stages of the redevelopment.
Together with the removal of the ceilings, partitions, staircase and existing services, these works are steadily taking the former Wilko store back to the condition required for its transformation into the new Lidl.
From Wilko to Lidl
Repurposing an existing retail building presents a different set of challenges to working within a new-build environment.
Before the new store can begin to take shape, the elements associated with the building's previous use need to be carefully removed while ensuring the structure and areas being retained are appropriately protected.
