Job description
The Role
We are seeking a technically skilled and safety-focused Solar O&M Engineer to support the delivery of high-quality operations and maintenance services across client-owned solar PV assets. Reporting to the O&M Manager, you will help ensure systems operate safely, efficiently, and in line with UK industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
Preventive & Corrective Maintenance
Conduct scheduled and reactive maintenance on commercial rooftop and ground-mounted solar PV systems.
Perform detailed inspections of modules, inverters, mounting structures, and electrical components.
Carry out AC/DC testing, thermographic surveys, torque checks, and system verification.
Produce clear, comprehensive Preventative Maintenance Reports with technical logs and recommendations.
Fault Diagnosis & Repair
Identify, diagnose, and resolve faults across AC/DC systems, inverters, and optimisers.
Implement corrective actions and maintain thorough documentation aligned with client and company procedures.
Performance Monitoring
Use monitoring platforms (e.g., SolarEdge, Hark) to assess asset performance.
Analyse data including PR, yield, and system availability against benchmarks and historical trends.
Health, Safety & Compliance
Conduct site-specific risk assessments and prepare RAMS in accordance with Solar Energy UK guidance.
Ensure full compliance with HSE regulations and recognised industry safety standards.
Promote a strong safety culture and halt work where conditions are unsafe.
Technical Documentation & Coordination
Support the O&M Manager as a technical liaison with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers.
Document all works for warranty, compliance, and audit purposes.
Person Specification
Essential
Level 3 City & Guilds/NVQ in Electrical Installations and current 18th Edition BS7671.
City & Guilds 2391 (Inspection & Testing) or equivalent.
ECS Gold Card.
SMSTS, Working at Height, IPAF/PASMA certification.
2–3 years’ experience in solar PV installation or maintenance (ground-mounted or commercial rooftop).
Strong knowledge of AC/DC systems, inverters, fault-finding, and electrical safety protocols.
Proficient with electrical testing equipment, diagnostic software, and monitoring platforms (SolarEdge, Hark).
Competent using MS Office and digital reporting tools (e.g., iAuditor).
Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel extensively with overnight stays.
Excellent problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and strong technical reporting skills.
Desirable
Experience with HV systems or HV Authorised Person (HV AP) qualification.
Familiarity with diagnostic tools, CCTV/network communications (Ethernet/Serial), and advanced monitoring platforms.
Thermographic Survey Certification.
Experience with battery storage systems.
